Highway design decisions made at the DPR stage rely entirely on the topographical data supplied at project inception. When survey tolerances are not clearly specified upfront, cross-section errors of even a few centimetres can compound into significant re-design costs once construction drawings are issued.

At AIMN Projects, we set instrument accuracy tolerances in consultation with the design consultant before fieldwork begins, and we cross-check GPS-derived elevations against total station benchmarks at regular intervals along the corridor. This discipline has consistently reduced downstream RFIs (requests for information) on the projects we support.

For agencies scoping a new highway or rail corridor, we recommend building explicit accuracy tolerance clauses into the survey scope of work rather than leaving them implicit.
